In fact, in some cases, healthy communication is working against instincts, but ones that don't serve us at all in long-lasting, fulfilling relationships. My wife and I have been together for 5 years, married for a little over a year and for the most part things are great. Sometimes our communication (especially during... read more disagreement) breaks down. Sometimes our sex life becomes monotonous. And sometimes one of us doesn’t feel appreciation from the other. We have always been proactive in building a better relationship together. For two years we tried bits and pieces of the Gottman method (and similar exercises) but would eventually find ourselves stuck again. Saul is able to, in a very kind way, remind you that you are not unique in these situations and show you from beginning to end how to practice the Gottman method. I learned my wife and I had been practicing the more advanced exercises but had no idea about the more basic (but most important) relationship building tools in this theory. By the end of day one my wife and I felt more close than we had in months, and by the end of day two we felt confident that we are “masters not disasters”. We have all the tools we need to be successful, now we need to practice them daily to make them a part of who we are and we do not need to pay a marriage counselor thousands of dollars to eventually, hopefully find our way. I would recommend this to everyone. Even if you feel you have a “healthy” relationship, this workshop can help you unlock higher levels of companionship. Some of these practices can even be applied to better relationships with your children, friends and co-workers. 10 out of 10 - wish we had done this sooner.

I cannot say enough good things about this workshop. it was fantastic all around and exceeded expectations. we had Saul as the facilitator and he is a wonderful... read more combination of knowledgeable, personable, light-hearted, positive, energetic, wise and reassuring. he kept reinforcing that there is hope because we both made it into the room willing to learn, as opposed to other struggling couples. he also reminded us that all couples get stuck, and SOME couples LEARN to get unstuck. we loved that each couple has their own little table. you learn the concepts as a group and then do exercises only with your partner, and it's never shared with the group or Saul (unless you ask him for some guidance). To keep it private Saul put on music during the exercises so no one can hear you. One of my biggest takeaways is that there is so much in common with struggling couples, even though we all think we are unique. we learned that fight dynamics have have certain principles, themes and even roles to them. so many lightbulbs went off for me. Another very big takeaway is what ongoing attitudes, practices and rituals can exacerbate or lessen the impact of the actual conflict. I would recommend this to any couple, even the "strongest" and I would recommend it to anyone about to get married too. while the course is over we now have card decks, graphics and keywords to remind us of the principles, and so many other tools in the book. I feel very enlightened, like we are now in the know about these secret tools and principles! I think what blew my mind the most was the exercise for the last stage of repairing a conflict, in which you find commonalities of feelings and values. that was the moment we realized we really were on the same side and having the same experience even though it didn't look like it. it's also very useful to watch your partner's level of openness and engagement to what is being offered; if you are both willing to receive the information and try the exercises there is great hope. a few pieces of feedback to mention on how it could be even more awesome, even though these are extremely, extremely minor in the grand scheme: I was a little disappointed that we didn't do the "softened start-up" exercise even though it was listed in the book. it's the only thing I had heard of before the course and I knew I desperately needed it. I also recommend not letting couples leave the room to do the exercises, because my partner and I even had a fight about where to sit to do the exercise!!! if we had had to stay in the room it would have eliminated this variable 🙂 finally, I think the program could be even more awesome if they spread what they cover on the second day across two days, so as to make the whole thing 3 days. even 2.5 days may have helped. the second day was very intense with a lot of material compressed into it. Saul said they wouldn't get as many people if they made it 3 days, so I do understand that. A final thought about the pros of doing it in person: we toyed with doing it at our own pace online, or even an online but live workshop, yet I am so glad we did it in person. it would not have had the same degree of impact otherwise. I'd say run, don't walk, to it! it's a game changer, of great value and feels like the way out we have been looking for.
